Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation
(ECMO)
VV (Venovenous) and VA (Venoarterial) ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) are advanced life support technologies used to provide temporary support for patients with severe heart or lung failure. VV ECMO is used to support patients with respiratory failure by oxygenating blood outside the body and returning it to the veins, allowing the lungs to rest and heal.
VA ECMO, on the other hand, supports both the heart and lungs by drawing blood from a vein, oxygenating it, and then pumping it back into the arterial system, helping to maintain circulation and oxygen supply to vital organs. Both ECMO systems are critical tools in intensive care, offering life-saving support when traditional treatments are insufficient.
